URGENT CARE vs EMERGENCY ROOM
Hey Cradle Thru College Parents!
Dr. Patel here, just sharing some down-to-earth info about when to reach out to us (your medical home), when to head to urgent care, and when it's time for the Emergency Department. As someone who used to work in urgent care, I get it - sometimes it's tough to know where to go. But I'm here to help you navigate it for you and your kiddo.
Let's dive into when it's Emergency Department time. Think of it like this - if your child is facing something really serious, like life or limb-threatening conditions, that's when you head to the ED or dial 911. Here are some examples to give you a clearer picture:
-
Allergic reaction with trouble breathing or vomiting
-
Broken bone with an obvious deformity
-
Burns (the serious kind)
-
Cuts that just won't stop bleeding
-
Trouble waking up or responding
-
Eye injury
-
Fever in kids under 60 days old
-
Seizures that won't quit
-
Anything involving swallowing things they shouldn't
Now, let's talk Urgent Care (UC) and your primary care provider (PCP). It can be a bit tricky, but if it's not an emergency, calling your PCP first is a great move. They can guide you, and if it's after hours, the Children's Mercy Nurse Advice Line is your go-to for next steps.
As a former urgent care doc, I was all about procedures - handling foreign bodies, simple lacerations with glue or staples, you name it. But, remember, some procedures are better suited for certain age ranges. Younger kids might need extra help sitting still, and pre-teens might get a bit anxious, but we've got ways to keep them calm.
We offer same-day sick appointments and even telehealth visits for certain things. Give us a ring at 816-942-5437 to chat with our awesome nurses about your child's health. We're here for you, every step of the way
