Heart Month

Let's get that heart pumping

February is American Heart Month, a time when everyone is encouraged to focus on their cardiovascular health. Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity is recommended.

However, February weather can be unpredictable, and spring provides many rainy days. It is common for parents to feel stuck at home or limited in opportunities to encourage their children to participate in activities that are enjoyable and offer variety.

On days of inclement weather, here are some ideas to promote physical exercise:

  • Preschool-Aged Children

  • Ride their tricycles in the garage

  • Have dance parties

  • Indoor hopscotch

  • School-Aged Children

  • Roller skating in the garage

  • Vigorous dancing

    • Some forms of yoga

    • For All Ages

    • Participate in games that require catching, throwing, and kicking

    • Play games such as tug of war or follow the leader

    • Jumping rope
