Let's Spend Time Outdoors
Fall is here, so let's take advantage of the change to get some exercise, reconnect with the family, and reset our minds.
Now that the summer sun has cooled down a lot, it is time to get out and enjoy the cooler weather. One healthy choice is to take a walk. Our family loves to be outside, and with the leaves changing color, it is a grand opportunity to see the wonders of the fall colors, spend time together, and get some exercise.
Mental Health
There is something to be said about viewing the beauty of nature. It brings a smile to our faces and gets us out of the house and into the fresh air. According to Michelle Harris, M.A., LMHC, ATR-BC, "[a]n autumn stroll can be an excellent stress reliever." She talks about how during stressful times your brain concentrates on the survival mode of fight or flight. With the change in colors, your brain is paying attention to the beauty of nature.
Nature also provides us with the opportunity to be surrounded by something bigger than ourselves. Jason goes on to say that such awe-inspiring moments "reduce self-centered thoughts and increase cooperative behavior."
Family Interaction
And the walking is a great time to get kids (and adults) away from the phone, tablet, and television. Personal interaction is also a great way to strengthen the bonds between family members. A long, leisurely walk provides an opportunity for defenses to drop and new opportunities for sincere discussions without interruptions. And it inspires children to choose active, healthy lifestyles as they grow older.
Exercise
Finally, walking is great exercise. It helps us maintain a healthy weight, which is important during the holiday food feasts. It also improves cardiovascular fitness, helps prevent or manage various conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Finally, it will improve your endurance and provide you with increased energy levels.
Try These Trails
There are several locations in the greater Kansas City area, such as Burrus Old Mill Park, Waterfall Park, Little Blue Springs Trail, not to mention the dozens of trails close to most of our homes. So, get out and enjoy each day. Carpe Diem!
