Outdoor Safety Tips for Fall Activities: Bikes, Hikes & Playgrounds

Fall Is for Fresh Air and Safe Adventures Crisp air and colorful leaves make fall the perfect time for outdoor play. But shorter days, changing weather, and seasonal gear can bring new safety challenges. Here's how to help your child stay safe while enjoying all that fall has to offer!

๐Ÿ Dress for Fall Weather

Fall days can be chilly in the morning and warm by afternoon.
๐Ÿงฅ Dress your child in layers they can add or remove
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Choose closed-toe shoes with good traction for damp leaves or muddy trails
๐Ÿงค Bring hats and gloves if temps dip

๐Ÿšฒ Bike & Scooter Safety

Fall is great for bike rides, but the earlier sunset and wet leaves can make conditions slippery or hard to see.
โœ… Always wear a properly fitted helmet
โœ… Check tires, brakes, and lights before each ride
โœ… Wear bright colors and add reflectors or lights
โœ… Avoid riding in the dark or during heavy rain

๐Ÿง—‍โ™€๏ธ Playground Precautions

๐Ÿƒ Watch for slippery surfaces from dew or leaves
๐Ÿงน Brush off equipment before use
๐Ÿชต Check for damaged equipment from weather wear
๐Ÿง’ Supervise closely, especially with younger children

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Hiking & Nature Walks

Hikes are a great way to explore nature and burn energy:
๐Ÿฅพ Stick to marked trails
๐ŸŒฒ Stay aware of wildlife or loose rocks
๐Ÿงด Bring water and bug spray - yes, ticks can still be active in fall!
๐Ÿ“ต Keep a charged phone in case of emergency

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Be Cautious with Fall Decorations

Around Halloween and harvest time:

  • Avoid candles in pumpkins - use battery lights instead

  • Make sure yard decorations don't block pathways or cause tripping hazards

  • Supervise young children around outdoor fire pits or space heaters
